AFTER STARTING THIS FRACTAL AREA AT MISTERX.CA, I WAS SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT THE APOPHYSIS PROGRAMS DISTRIBUTED HERE DO NOT WORK FOR MY FRIENDS WITH MAC COMPUTERS. OF COURSE BEING A PC USER, I HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING THIS. FURTHERMORE, I HAD NO WAY OF CHECKING OUT IF THERE WERE OTHER OPTIONS THAT WOULD WORK ON A MAC. THEN I LEARNED THAT MY FLAKEY FRIEND KEVIN/DALLAS VERY MUCH WANTED TO "PLAY" WITH APOPHYSIS, AND GUESS WHAT, HE IS A PROUD MAC USER! SO I ASKED KEV IF HE WOULD LOOK INTO THIS "PROBLEM", AND IF HE WAS SUCCESSFUL IN GETTING APOPHYSIS TO WORK FOR HIM, TO DOCUMENT HOW HE WAS ABLE TO DO IT. WELL HE WAS SUCCESSFUL, AND THIS IS HIS STORY!
| I
don't know how many Mac Users there are out there besides myself that have
found themselves very frustrated trying to join in on the "Apophysis, Fractal
Making Fun". I have just about pulled the rest of my hair out in
frustration. One mistake I had been making was to do a Google search
for "Making Fractals on Macs". All I kept running across were pretty crude
applications or ones that just did not work. After talking with X
and expressing my frustration, he suggested I look up "Apophysis on Macs"
and......... Wa La, I felt the slight hint of a grin creeping onto my face.
OK, first off you MUST HAVE Java 1.4 or higher. The Java version I have is 1.4.2 The Mac system I am running on is OS X 10.4.11 After talking to X I found a site that has a download for a Fractal making program. It is Apophysis-J2.5 for Mac. The link: http://herr-grinch.deviantart.com/art/Apophysis-J-2-5-for-Mac-86807995. I downloaded it and suddenly the world was right again. I then started running into a few hitches. One being, the program kept telling me I did not have enough memory to render the Flame. Reasons unknown to me, the Mac version will not give you the option to put in a Buffer depth or bump up the memory, at least is is not letting me change it. So you're basically stuck with the memory it gives you. Thus you will not be able to make your fractals as sharp and clear as PCers are able to. I also ran into a few problems trying to render it the size I wanted. So, in my case I had to size it down until it said I had enough memory. You will have to go a little lower than it tells you. It might say you have enough memory, but when you try and render, it will tell you it can not allocate more memory. Just keep reducing the size until it will let you render. I looked around for solutions to my problems via the internet. I ran across a newer version of the above mentioned. It is Apophysis-J2.56.jar for Mac. Here is the link: http://www.box.net/shared/i2s8t710cw. A lot of problems I was having seemed to go away. I can not really tell you if you could just download this version first. When I downloaded this version it really just updated the Apophysis-J2.5 I had originally downloaded. I don't see any reason why you can not just download this version. My little note is for the Mac People out there having the same problems I have been having getting started and maybe just maybe, someone can help figure out some of these problems and maybe a solution......Then let me know!!!! I am now having problems doing a render, it just does not want to work. It does it in about 2.5 seconds and then my file is blank. It was working for me last night??? Besides the fact that I now have absolutely no idea of what I am doing, it seemed to be working enough to make some cool art. But, I have found the need to enroll in X's school of knowledge once again, Previously Flaking and now for Fractals. Believe me I strongly suggest you do the same!!!! I hope this helps someone. Not sure, but I can hope! Good Luck and have fun!!! Kevin |
THANX
SO MUCH, KEV! I KNOW MAC USERS WILL FIND THIS INFORMATION INFORMATIVE
AND MOST HELPFUL! NOW WE KNOW THAT APOPHYSIS CAN BE ENJOYED BY EVERYONE!
ALSO,
I AM QUITE CONFIDENT THAT THESE EARLY "PROBLEMS" YOU ARE HAVING WILL BE
FIGURED OUT! I ALSO HAD THE RENDER AND MEMORY PROBLEMS WITH THE PC
VERSIONS WHEN I FIRST STARTED OUT, BUT I SOMEHOW MANANGED TO GET THAT FIGURED
OUT! TOGETHER WE WILL DO THE SAME FOR YOU! ;D
